These drawings are waking dreamscapes - reflections and interpretations of what I see and feel on any given day as I wander through the city. Most were started, and often completed, on the NYC subways. The trains, with the fascinating masses that use them, are an endless source of inspiration. They are a perfect example of the constant juxtaposition of connectivity and isolation in this city. People emerge out of and into one another as the joys and burdens of their day reveal themselves. Little bits of energy good and bad snake into all of us in the confined space of the train carriage as we studiously avoid looking at anyone for too long. The drawings are improvisational. Each one emerges, twists and branches in ways I can never really predict. I see a line, a path, and follow it, and then it changes. Sometimes simple, sometimes complex, always a gift.
Note: Almost all original drawings are on off-white paper and bear some signs of the process of their creation - marks of their time in transit on the NYC subways and in the bars and restaurants where I worked on them. If you are interested in purchasing an original, please contact me for un-retouched images at firstname.lastname@example.org. All prints will appear as shown here (unless you choose a canvas print - those are also slightly off-white).
